Man-Made Disasters – Ideologies, Decision Making and Cultures of Responsibility

Symposium | 28. Mai 2026 | 13:00 – 18:30 OEZ | Metsätalo, B214, Unioninkatu 40, Helsinki und online

40 years after Chornobyl, the Max Weber Netzwerk Osteuropa / Max Weber Network Eastern Europe (MWNO) and the Aleksanteri Intitute in Helsinki want to reflect on historical constellations and aftereffects of man-made disasters with a focus on nuclear, military and petrocultures in Eastern Europe and Northern Eurasia from the Cold War until today.

Recent devastating or potentially devastating incidents such as the destruction of the Kachovka dam, damage to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, the oil spill in the Kerch Strait, the permanent dangers posed by grey oil tankers in the Baltic and the Black Sea, and the damage to the protective shell of reactor 4 in Chornobyl by a Russian drone attack make the topic sadly a highly relevant one.

At this symposium, anthropologists, historians, political scientists and literary scholars will discuss the radioactive afterlife of state socialism alongside the catastrophic effects of military activities (from weapons testing and maneuvers to war), extensive resource extraction and petrocultures on societies and the environment. We will also reflect on the ideological underpinnings of nuclear and petrocultures and tackle ongoing discussions in national and international law about how to draw the line between accident and deliberately caused ecocide and how to define and implement environmental justice.
